  • This scene shows Tessie Hutchinson being sacrificed for the lottery. It states that, "Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her."
  • The beginning scene where the boys are picking up rocks foreshadows what the community plans to do with the 'winner' of the lottery, because at the end Tessie is picked and gets rocks thrown at her.
  • Shirley Jackson creates the mood of the story scared tense at this point of the story by having the community nervous and scared while picking their lotteries.
