Maria Winkelmann was the first woman to discover a new comet in 1702 because she and her husband had been taking turns looking at the sky in his observatory.
Unfortunately, her husband took credit for the discovery and thus the comet was named after him, not Maria.
He only told the truth when he was dying in 1710.
After he died the Royals didn’t want to let Maria keep making the calendars on her own because she was a woman, but she had been for a long time because her husband was so sick, so they agreed.
Maria Winkelmann died of fever in Berlin on December 29th, 1720.
