Storyboard Text

  • Maria Winkelmann was the first woman to discover a new comet in 1702 because she and her husband had been taking turns looking at the sky in his observatory.
  • Unfortunately, her husband took credit for the discovery and thus the comet was named after him, not Maria.
  • He only told the truth when he was dying in 1710.
  • After he died the Royals didn’t want to let Maria keep making the calendars on her own because she was a woman, but she had been for a long time because her husband was so sick, so they agreed.
  • Maria Winkelmann died of fever in Berlin on December 29th, 1720.
