The first day of school is about to begin and Mr. Kermit can only think about retirement. Mr. Kermit used to be the kind of teacher who thought, "New students to teach, new minds to fill with knowledge, new futures to shape." But that was 30 years ago, a lot has changed in his life...
The first day of school... that means retirement is only 10 months away.
When Mr. Kermit walks into Greenwich Middle School, the superintendent, Mr. Thaddeus, and the Principal, Mrs. Vargas, have a message for him. Mr. Kermit's schedule changed and will now be teaching the Self-Contained Special Eighth Grade Class, also known as the Unteachables. The Unteachables are a class of 8th graders who are a combination of misfits, delinquents, and academic disasters.
"There's been a change in the schedule" (14)
"As you know, Mary Angeletto has left the district, so we're moving you to her spot with the Self-Contained Special Eighth-Grade Class" (14)
"You mean the Unteachables?" (14)
Teaching the Unteachables is a challenge and both Mr. Thaddeus and Mrs. Vargas know that, which is why they assigned Mr. Kermit to teach them. They don't really mean what they said. They only assigned Mr. Kermit to teach the Unteachables because they know he is up for early retirement and they are trying to make him quit before he qualifies. Mr. Kermit knows what they are up to because him and Mr. Thaddeus have a complicated relationship...
"They're a challenging group, which is why we've chosen a teacher with a great deal of experience" (14-15)
"Of course, if you don't feel you're up to the job" (15)
"So that's what this is really about" (15)
Flashback
It all happened 25 years ago. Mr. Thaddeus was principal and Mr. Kermit's class scored number 1 on the National Aptitude Test. Until the truth came out. A kid named Jake Terravona had gotten hold of the test; that's why they aced it, they were cheating. And when the whole thing blew up, the teacher was to blame. Mr. Kermit's life fell apart; he was no longer respected at school, his fiancé broke up with him, and all he looked forward to during the year was his pay check.
All right everyone, start your test!
Now Mr. Thaddeus wants to get back at him for what he did to the school's reputation by ruining his chances for early retirement. But, Mr. Kermit won't let Mr. Thaddeus get to his head. He's up for a challenge and will do anything to get that early retirement. He walks straight out of the room enjoying his dramatic exit. He is gonna get through his last year at Greenwich Middle School, by teaching the Unteachables.
"I enjoy a good challenge" (17)
"How bad could it be? Behavior issues, learning problems, juvenile delinquents? Does Thaddeus honestly think I've never crossed paths with students like this before?" Mr. Kermit thinks while walking to room 117. Mr. Kermit enters his new classroom. Paper flying everywhere, screaming, sleeping, books on fire, sticks on fire and smoke. He introduces himself to the class...only ten months until June.
"Good morning, I'm your teacher Mr. Kermit" (19)
