Our teacher wants us to write the fraction 2/6 in simplest form. Do you know how to do that?
Yes. The simplest form of 2/6 is 1/3. You must divide the numerator and denoinator by the same number. In this case it is two.
Well I saw a crazy fraction on the our homework which had a fraction and a whole number.
That is called a mixed number which can be converted into a improper fraction by multiplying the denominator and whole number plus the numerator to get a new numerator. But remember to keep the same denominator.
So if the crazy fraction was 2 and 3/4. Using your method if we converted it to a improper fraction it would be 11/4. Right?
That's correct because if you convert 11/4 by determining the number of wholes (2 in the case) the remainder would be 3. If we keep the denominator, when we convert it back to a mixed number it would be 2 and 3/4.
