years after the civil war sheep and cattle ranching was a huge business . most new Mexicans made a living off of sheep ranching. sheep was the main source of live stock raised in new mexico in till the 1800s . most of the ranchers used sheep for wool in till the gold rush in Californian caused a demand for sheep meat.
The Santa Fe rail road was the first rail road company to build tracks in New Mexico. During 1880-1950 the rail road had more then 3000 miles of rail road track across New Mexico. After the rail road was made people from all over even different countries start to move here and apply for jobs.
explorers have been trying to search for gold and silver in new mexico sense the 1540s. We found bits of gold and silver during that time but the first gold strike didn't occur till the 1830s. silver was also starting to increase in the 1860s and 1870s.After we started finding gold and silver the small cities started to become boom towns.
The harvey houses were made for tourist that traveled threw New Mexico. Harvey houses were places for people to sleep and eat. Harvey houses were named after a man named Fred Harvey a business man from England. Men that worked as waiters were usually unreliable and rude to customers so Fred Harvey only employed women to work there.
tourism was a huge thing when we got our railroad, people from all over came to use is. lots of tourist also loved to learn about the southwest culture especially about Indian pueblos. Tourist really enjoyed the beauty and warmth of climate.
back in those days the wild west could be a bit dangerous but also was a huge success for new mexico because our ranching business got huge same with our mining and we finally made a railroad track so tourist got huge for us to.
