On a cruise ship in 2002 for his honeymoon John is drafted to the Iraq War. John was 1 semester away from graduating college when he joined the Florida National Guard. He only joined the National Guard was for the free education and training experience. His lack of a full basic training and being sent to he front lines makes him certain that the odds are against his favor.
Oh my god you were 2 classes away from graduating!
Please be careful sweetie.
I can't believe they're drafting me!
Due to the sandstorm that suddenly started to worse all of the sudden, John was certain that his M249 SAW would not be able to fire. John was separated from his squad from the sandstorm and decided to dig a hole and wait for orders. John was in that hole for hours about his favorite memories of his squad. He then meets a Marine captain and says that he should follow him to a tent to contact his squad.
Follow me to the tent soldier!
We have to get out of this storm!
MY GUN WON'T FIRE
US troops received recent intel that the Taliban have multiple Russian tanks in their armories. This was a problem for John because he had just given away his Anti-Tank launcher to another platoon in Baghdad. He knows that if the Taliban attack their position right now his platoon, battalion, and himself will be slaughtered. His entire temporary base is so vulnerable that even a small arms attack will cause multiple casualties.
WE WILL DESTROY THE AMERICANS
We shall be victorious
They don't stand a chance w/ our firepower!
John opened one of the tents to find Sgt. Mears who was part of his company. He was happy that he found someone he knew and could trust. Mears tells John that a part of his squad was almost killed by friendly fire because Second Platoon ordered Mark 19 rounds on their positions they thought they were enemies. Because of the sandstorm radio communications have been ruined and misunderstood nearly costing lives.
The Last True Story I'll Ever Tell Daniyal Farooqui
I can't believe I found you!
Where have you been?
We have to find the rest of the squad
When John is free late nights that John has he opens his recent letter his wife delivered him. He reminisces about his wedding, honeymoon, and fun times in college. His wife put her perfume and their dog's paw print to help him motivate him to come home safely. Sometimes John wishes his dog was w/ him to ride in his humvee to keep him company.
I can't wait to see you again, honey. I love you so much.
I miss them so much
John gets new intel from Staff Sergeant Connel that his division won't be going home but would stay a couple months in Kuwait to relieve Delta squad. His battalion is beyond crossed w/ Connel because never got to fight in a war. Connel is dragging their service longer then the government needed because John is just part of the National Guard. Connel was too old to fight in the Iraq war but is more qualified then John's entire platoon combined and is jealous that he isn't able to fight and they are.
