At Elsinore Castle, in Denmark, the ghost of the late King Hamlet pays a visit to his son Prince Hamlet. He informs his son that the current King Claudius - who had married King Hamlet's wife Queen Gertrude - was Hamlet's murderer.
Prince Hamlet doesn't know whether or not this ghost that has visited him is the devil or his dad, so he decides that the best way to see if Claudius is in fact his father's murderer is to put on a play and watch his reaction.
Hamlet confronts Queen Gertrude about why she married King Claudius. In this scene, he believes that King Claudius is hiding behind a tapestry in the same room, and ends up stabbing Polonius - the father of the woman he intends to marry - instead.
As a consequence for killing Polonius and as a way to get rid of King Claudius' problems, the king banishes Prince Hamlet to England.
King Claudius intends for Hamlet to be executed in England, so he has essentially sent him to his death. However, Hamlet later escapes and heads back to Denmark.
Hearing of her father's death & Hamlet's banishment, Ophelia drowns herself before Hamlet returns.
