- Father Alexandre de Rhodes has traveled 6,000 miles from France to Vietnam; to "save" the souls of non-Christian Vietnamese.
- In two years he converted 6,700 people from Confucianism to Catholicism
- He peached six sermons a day.
- Vietnam's emperor was wary of the Frenchmans religion and thought it was a calling card for an envision force. So he banished him out of the country.
- Soon he will be proven right to be wary of the Frenchman.
- Two centuries later the French proved the emperor right, the French appeared off the shores of Vietnam. In 26 years, Vietnam became a French colony.
- They also thrived in making opium and turned the Vietnamese into addicts.
- The French drafted peasants to produce rubber, salt, and alcohol in slave like conditions.
- But the French misread their colonial subjects.
- Paul Doumer explained that when the French arrived "the Annamites were ripe for servitude."
- The Vietnamese spurned slavery, and organized a resistance. By using their knowledge of the countryside, they outwitted the French.
