Iva is emotionally and physically exhausted. She works 6 days a week as a single mother. When she gets off of work, she immediately picks up her children and starts helping with homework, extracurricular activities, cooking, bathing, and much more. She became so overwhelmed with emotion that she had a breakdown in her bedroom after putting the kids down for bed.
Iva realizes she hasn't taken anytime to care for herself in years, and she has become depressed. Research is clear that a depressed parent is a less effective one (Oyserman, Mowbray, Meares, & Firminger, 2003). She then makes a vow to take better care of herself so that she can take better care of her children.
Iva has started therapy. She also takes one day each week to go for a walk alone while her mother watches her children. She has noticed that she has more energy, she sleeps better, and she is able to be more patient with her children.
