Good morning class! Today we are going to be talking about the phases of the moon.
The first phase is new moon. This is when the moon is in front of the sun, so we only see the dark side of it from Earth.
As the moon orbits around Earth, it appears to get bigger. This is called waxing. Here, we will see the First Quarter phase, when the moon is 1/4 through its cycle.
Then, we see the moon with the sun lighting up the entire side that we see. This is called the full moon.
After, the moon goes around the other side of Earth, and appears to get smaller. This is called waning. Here, we will see the Third Quarter phase, when the moon is 3/4 of the way through its cycle.
Finally, the moon has completed a full orbit around Earth, and we are back at new moon.
