Storyboard Text

  • Good morning class! Today we are going to be talking about the phases of the moon.
  • The first phase is new moon. This is when the moon is in front of the sun, so we only see the dark side of it from Earth.
  • As the moon orbits around Earth, it appears to get bigger. This is called waxing. Here, we will see the First Quarter phase, when the moon is 1/4 through its cycle.
  • Then, we see the moon with the sun lighting up the entire side that we see. This is called the full moon.
  • After, the moon goes around the other side of Earth, and appears to get smaller. This is called waning. Here, we will see the Third Quarter phase, when the moon is 3/4 of the way through its cycle.
  • Finally, the moon has completed a full orbit around Earth, and we are back at new moon.
