  • It's the year 1776, and 13 year old Samuel's town has been burned down. His parents have been captured and it's up to him to rescue them as the Revolutionary War starts around him. 
  • History
  • I must find my parents.
  • Samuel tried to tell his young friend Annie to stay in Philadelphia, where it's safe, but she insists on coming to New York with him.

  • You have to stay here in Philadelphia.
  • Samuel and Annie, take a boat into New York, where they are told Prisoners of War are often held in abandoned Royal Navy ships or warehouses.

  • We'll search the whole city.
  • Following the events in Lexington and Concord in April of 1775, 1776 was ultimately the start of the war. The Declaration of Independence was issued in this year, and one of the first major battles, the battle of Brooklyn Heights took place in 1776.
  • Philadelphia was a very important place for the Patriots. It was described as the heart of the Revolution and it was very beneficial that we held it for the majority of the war. The Declaration of Independence was signed here, and it held the first Continental Congress.
  • I have to help you.
  • As soon as we leave the city we're in danger.
  • Although it isn't a very important allusion in the book, it was accurate. The Royal Navy was the British naval force. Sometimes the ships were used to hide prisoners and it usually blockaded American ports. The colonists couldn't do much about it because the Royal Navy was superior.
