  • The Enlightenment embodied a variety of ideas focused on the importance of reason and the evidence of the senses as the primary sources of knowledge and advanced ideals such as liberty, fraternity and separation of church and state. From this emerged reform movements, and feminism.
  • Economic Developments and Innovations
  • A time when the manufacturing of goods moved from small shops and homes to large factories. This shift brought about changes in culture as people moved from rural areas to big cities in order to work.
  • New social classes emerged as middle class who were restricted to their homes and children and working class women who worked. This is one of the reasons feminism was developed, due to the inequality and restrictions to what women could do.
  • The free trade policies and laissez faire capitalism was adopted, businesses were extended on a large scale due to this. This also influenced the increase standard of living for some due to the available and affordable consumer goods.
