Their father is off to fight in the Civil War. To make Christmas better they decide to buy themselves gifts.
Meg and Jo go (rich) Sally Gardiner's home for a New Years Eve party.
They receive a letter from their father, which inspires them to not be burdened by their poverty as much as before and be more cheerful.
Jo meets Laurie at the party
Mr. Laurence, the March's next door neighbour gives the March family a feast as a reward. (He is wealthy)
Mr. Laurence meets Jo when she visits Laurie while he's ill.
Laurie is mr. Laurence's grandson, after the party he escorts the girls home. The March sisters are sad about going back to their daily life after the holidays.
Jo accidentally insults his painting in front of him, he admires her spunk. Soon he meets all the sisters and he favours Beth, he gifts her his deceased granddaughter's piano
