Covey was waiting for Frederick in the loft and thought to himself “When that boy comes back he’s gonna get the worst whipping in his life.” Covey was extremely angry at Frederick because he left and didn’t come back in time. Covey was ready to whip Frederick as soon as he comes into the loft.
Frederick was in the field and remembered the “magical” root and thought to himself “This isn’t going to protect me at all”. So Frederick goes into the loft and is stopped by Covey and Covey began to whip Frederick. Then all of a sudden Frederick got the courage to fight back, this fight lasted about three hours long. ”Your never going to whip me again!” said Frederick, “Well will see about that!” said Covey.
Frederick won the fight with Covey. “I guess that root was magical after all” said Frederick. After that fight Covey never touched or whipped Frederick ever again. Frederick knew that his mom would be proud of him. Frederick felt free in a way, but he was still a slave, Frederick thought to himself “My journey to freedom won’t be as challenging as I thought”. Frederick knew that his road to freedom will still be challenging but he knew he would have the courage to keep going.
