"Crack pop pop Crack. Gunfire everyone down.the teacher shouted. Go quickly all of you into the bushes now. Do you hear me not at home and stay away from the villages"!! (Park #6) This shows external conflict. The village is getting attacked because of the war and the teacher makes everyone hide in the bushes. The teacher warns the students not to go into the village because the soldiers will make the kids fight in the war.
" Where are we going? Where is my family? when will I see them again? If I die now, I will never see my family again."(Park #11) Salva is stressing about where his family is and if they're alive or not this shows internal conflict and that he cares about them. This creates conflict because he doesn't know where to go and is all alone.
"Every breath Salva took seemed to drain strength rather than restore it. Thorns gored his feet, his lips became cracked and parched. It was the hardest thing Salva had ever endured taking only sips when his body cried out for huge gulps of thirst quenching water. the pain was terrible, soon he was crying so hard he could hardly breathe."(Park #52) Salva is at the hardest part of the journey which is the akobo desert, in the day time it was so hot that Salvas shoes melted and at night it could get to freezing temperature. Salva had to endure this pain emotionally and physically so that he could make it to his destination.
