Beowulf is called to adventure when he hears the stories of Grendel terrorizing the Danes.
Beowulf goes and fights Grendel with no weapons and only his bare hands. He is victorious and defeats Grendel by ripping off one of his arms.
Beowulf must be careful to not fall into the temptation of greed and pride. He is warned of this by Hrothgar. He also must learn to not be arrogant. This happens during the fight with Grendel's Mother where it shows Beowulf is in mortal peril. Beowulf after the 50 years is shown to be wise and very responsible.

Beowulf fights Grendel's Mother and we see that Beowulf is not invincible and is mortal. Beowulf's armor saves him and he needed a weapon to win. Hrothgar's men thinks he died.
Beowulf after 50 years is a king and his kingdom is under attack by a dragon. Beowulf goes to fight the dragon with his men, but all but one runs away. Beowulf is fully convicted in slaying the dragon even at the cost of his life.
