I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Maya isn't broken or sad but instead proud. She laughs at people who feel she is upset with herself and what she has.
This line illustrates that when people push her down and walk all over her she will still rise. Maya isn't letting anyone have the satisfactory of dragging her down.
This line talks about African Americans through slavery and how horrible it was. She was washed away with everybody else but accomplished something that had set her apart.
