The Sumerians moved to Sumer from the foothills. Here they invented the wheel which was much more efficient. They created complex irragation systems and worked together to build a community.
There was three main category's that people were put in. Kings, queens, priests, and government officials were highest. Government officials wrote scribes that helped record laws and important contracts. Next were merchants and artisans who made things. And lastly there was slaves who were at the lowest level.
The Sumerians tried to please their god in every aspect. They constructed temples and religious towers called Ziggurats. They believed that their gods lived in Ziggurats. They also made statues to express religious belief
There were many types of artists in Sumer. Metal workers made objects. Arcitects designed temples and ziggurats. And sculpters carved statues. One popular instrument was the lyre which was a small harp made of a sound box.
The Sumerians eventually developed the wheel. Before that they had to drag their goods on flat-bottomed carts called sledges. Wheels were easier because you could move goods over long distances, and could support heavy loads.
The Sumerians created a written language called cuneiform. Cuneiform writing contained 2,000 symbols to stand for sounds and words. They also used pictographs that stand for real objects such as snake or water.
