  • The Sioux tribe originally lived in the Great Plains.
  • They currently live in Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Southern Canada.
  • The Sioux tribe did not have a written language. The elders would paint pictures on hide, these were called winter counts.
  • The Sioux tribe has a sacred pipe tradition. They pray to Wakantanka and smoke special pipes to help prayers be heard.
  • They believe a spirit called White Buffalo Woman gave them a scared pipe. The Sioux had a sun dance ceremony that they did with the pipe. It lasted four days and the dancers did not eat or sleep for the four days.
  • Most Sioux men owned a sacred pipe.
  • One day a woman was picking corn in a cornfield. She heard cries and thought "What child could be lost in a cornfield." She went deeper into the cornfield to find out it was not a child crying but a little ear of corn. The corn said "Please take me with you." The lady took the ear of corn with her. The lesson of this story is no one should be left behind.
