As the creature awoke, he was confused about his new life.
He decided to wander around after his creator, Victor Frankenstein, ran away from him. The creature soon arrived at a village. Although, the villagers were frightened by his grotesqueness and began to attack him with stones and sticks until he ran off.
The creature then found a hut to hide in. He discovered a crack through this hut where he observed a family, the DeLacey's. It seemed to him that this family had everything they needed; shelter, food, and company. But, in reality, the DeLacey's were living in poverty.
As he observed the family, he noticed a new girl, Safie, began to live with them. Felix, the eldest son, would read Volney's, Ruins of the Empires, to her to teach her English. At the same time, the creature payed attention to these lessons and also learned to speak.
The creature felt a certain way about this family. He did good deeds for them such as, cut their firewood and stopped stealing their food since he realized they were hungry. He decided to build up his manners so that one day the family could meet him.
Unfortunately, when he approached the family, they were horrified by his appearance and began to attack him until he left the house.
