Hi Chaim! There is a debate between the Rambam and Rabbi Yehuda HaLevi (The Kuzari) about the role of the Navi. Let me tell you all about it.
Hi Moshe, Do you know what the role of a Navi is?
The Rambam in Moreh Nevuchim 2:32 has 3 opinions about prophecy:1.There are “ignorant” people who think that God chooses anyone He wants to receive Nevuah regardless of age and level of intelligence. God only gives prophecy to pious people.2. Receiving prophecy can only happen to a person who is immersed in Torah study. According to this opinion, a person who prepares himself for prayer and has the proper mindset will receive Nevua.3. Even if a person has the proper mindset, they still may not receive prophecy from Hashem.
Unlike the Rambam who believed that one receives Nevuah if he is in the right frame of mind, Rabbi Yehudah HaLevi argued that righetousness and good deeds (would) lead an individualto prophecy.Rabbi Yehuda HaLevi did not agree with the Rambam that any person (Jew or non Jew) could be a Navi. According to the Rambam, all that was important was the message from Hashem, not whether or not the prophet was Jewish.Additionally, Rabbi Yehuda HaLevi had a mystical approach to Nevuah unlike Rambam who provided a rational explanation.
The Kuzari also had a discussion with a rabbi about the role of a Navi. They discussed an important issue about prophecy outside the land of Israel. The Rabbi explained that for anyone who had nevuah outside Israel, their nevuah was about the land of Israel.
My pleasure! There is still so much more to learn, so let's discuss this topic more next tomorrow.
I hope that explanation was helpful.
I now know a lot more about the role of a Navi. Thanks Moshe!
