Storyboard Text

  • Today we will be learning about the American Civil War.
  • What was life like for an enslaved person at that time?
  • Up until slavery was abolished, people could be kidnapped from their homes and forced onto a boat to America to work as slaves
  • Take the middle passage! We're taking the people we've kidnapped to America!
  • This one is sold to a cotton plantation.
  • Slaves could be auctioned and bought by plantation owners or other rich white men.  Lots of slaves were separated from their families after being bought.
  • No!!!
  • A large majority of slaves were forced to work in the fields at large farms or plantations picking cotton or other crops.
  • ...So exhausted and overheated...
  • Enslaved people rested in slave quarters that they were often forced to share with other people. These huts had little to no furniture and most likely had dirt floors and no heating or water
  • After a long day of grueling work I don't even have a bed to sleep in. 
  • Only a few more days until we reach Canada!
  • If slaves wanted to escape, they had to plan very carefully to sneak past the plantation guards then travel for several days to get to the North. Many slaves were assisted in their journey north by people participating in the Underground Railroad.
