Chapter 3 - The Waste Chute
Ask Valentine what he did to Hester Shaw!
The Protagonist, Tom Natsworthy, is interrupted from his work by a hunt. He lives on London, one of the moving Traction Cities. As he goes to the observation deck, he soon gets into a fight with Herbert Melliphant beofore his boss catches him skipping work.
Chapter 4 - The Out-Country
Leave me alone!
But where are you going?
After being caught, Tom is sent to The Gut in order to help take care of the most recent catch. He ends up meeting his hero Thaddeus Valentine and Thad's daughter Katherine. While Tom attempts to impress his hero, the group remains unaware of the lurking threat.
Chapter 5 - The Lord Mayor
...A ghost from my past. I can't imagine how she escaped... But she is dead now.
You are sure of that?
After a mysterious figure attempts to stab Valentine, Tom decides to try and play hero. He attempts to catch the figure and ends up coming face to face with them in front of the waste chute. She plunges into the waster chute just before Valentine shows up. Tom turns to Valentine before he is shoved into the waste chute as well, Valentine walking away as Tom fell.
Chapter 6 - Speedwell
And then Valentine drew his sword and he... and he...
After being pushed down the waste chute, Tom wakes up in the out-country. Hester, the assassin, also survived the fall and isn't far off. She is unhappy with Tom's attempt to stop her from killing Valentine and stalks off, following London's tracks. Tom follows aimlessly, still in shock from being pushed by Valentine.
I've got to get back into London, haven't I?
Back on London, Katherine mourns over Tom's "death" while simultaneously eavesdropping in on her father and the Lord Mayor's conversation. She catches word of something called "MEDUSA" and it doesn't sound good.
What on earth is MEDUSA
Stuck in the Out-Country, Tom and Hester settle down for the night. Hester ends up telling Tom the story of her childhood. Valentine killed both of her parents and tried to kill her. Tom vows to help Hester find justice. Just as they get ready to sleep, the city of Speedwell rolls up... and offers them a ride.
