In another week London will be within range of Batmunkh Gompa, the Shield-Wall. For a thousand years the Anti-Traction League has cowered behind it, holding out against the tide of history. MEDUSA will destroy it with a single stroke!
Peavey reveals his plan to Tom and Hester, he's going to attack the damaged AirHaven. After the attack Shrike committed, the floating city had to land for repairs and rumor has it that the city is incredibly weak. Peavey also says Anna Fang is a horrible and cruel spy... Strange. Turns out Turnbridge isn't only a city with wheels, but flotation devices too. Long story short, AirHaven isn't weak, Turnbridge sinks, and Peavey leaves only the only life raft with just a couple members of his crew.
Chapter 22 - Shrike
He would have turned you into a monster!
No, you're not! You're my friend!
I'm already a monster!
Tom and Hester follow Peavey towards AirHaven on foot. Before they can arrive, the flying city finishes up repairs and flies away. To make matters worse Peavey falls into quicksand, leaving him defenseless. A member of his crew takes advantage and shoots him, turning to do the same to Tom and Hester. Before he can do so, a familiar voice joins the encounter.
Chapter 23 - MEDUSA
Still hunting for information, Katherine disguises her self as an engineer and sneaks into a private meeting. She learns that MEDUSA is an "experimental energy weapon" that her dad discovered. It's going to be used to attack the anti-tractionist league. The Lord Mayor also decides an extravagant test of the super weapon is necessary... so the cathedral begins to open...
Chapter 24 - An Agent of the League
I don't think so! Hester hates me!
As Shrike approaches, the remaining pirates attempt to kill him. They fail miserably and they end up dead instead. Tom goes to run but stops when he notices Hester isn't following. Shrike tells Hester that he's going to kill her, but bring her back as a robot. She won't have memories... feelings... and she agrees to do it. Tom has other plans and sneaks up behind Shrike, stabbing him just right, leaving him finally dead. Tom is ecstatic but Hester is FURIOUS, and Tom doesn't understand why.
Well, I care about you, whether you like it or not!
I hate you! I hate you!
The cathedral has become a weapon of mass destruction and Katherine is horrified. She sheds her disguise and runs through the pouring rain, looking for a form of escape. She watches as MEDUSA is fired at the city that was pursuing London. With a bright light and deafening boom... the city is gone. Katherine expects people to be horrified just as she is, but instead... they're cheering.
No! Oh, no, no, no!
Anna shows up just in time, having seen the drama for her plane. She takes Tom and Hester to have a meal and get medical attention. Anna helps Hester to settle down before talking to Tom. Tom is still uneasy with Anna, considering Peavey was right, she's a spy for the Anti-Tractionist League, but he listens anyways. Anna wants Hester to travel with her so that she can tell her side of the story of Valentine, there's just one problem. Hester won't go anywhere without Tom.
Nonsense. She likes you very much. She spent half the night telling me how kind you have been, and how wonderfully brave you were, killing that machine-man.
