  • After the Cubans started rebelling the Spanish sent over Valeriano Weyler who put them in reconsitration camps. The Cubans wanting the U.S to help put exaggerated stories about there conditions in the news .

  • The USS Maine was sent to Cuba to protect American interests as a result of the rebellion. On February 15, 1898, the ship was blown up by a mine, and 260 crew members were killed. No country was formally blamed, but the Spanish were suspected.
  • Treaty of Paris
  • President McKinley attempted to prevent war and tried to persuade the Spanish government to adopt a policy that would do so. The Spanish waited too long and the US started positioning for war.
  • Territory Gained by the U.S
  • The Americans demanded 4 thing from the Spanish and the said yes to all but the last one. Which was to give and reginize Cuban independance.
  • The treaty ended the Spanish-American War and gave Cuba complete independence.
  • For 2 million dollars, Spain gave to the U.S. the territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
