The next morning he returned to the plantation where Covey ran out of the house his face bright in anger because he had run away. He had came out with a long whip ready to hurt Douglass. But before he could get him Douglass ran into the cornfield and hid and Covey didn’t find him.
Douglass spent most of the day in the woods starving he knew he couldn’t stay there forever or he would die of starvation. but if he went back to the plantation he knew he would be whipped possibly even to death. That night he met another slave named Sandy, Sandy who had a free wife and he was going to see her, he invited Douglass over to his home. While he was there he asked Sandy “should I go back to the plantation?”. With a sad look Sandy told him he should go back even though they both knew how it could turn out.
Douglass went back with a root Sandy had given him saying that it would stop him from being whipped by Covey. That morning Covey had told him to “clean the stables” so douglass had gone done that he was feeding the horses when covey came in with a long rope. Douglass knew what was going to happen he felt fear grip it's ugly claws around him. But he had already decided he wasn’t going to let Covey whip him. And soon him and Covey were fighting punches and kicks being thrown for two hours but douglass never gave up. He had decided that he wasn’t going to let him or any other slave owner whip him ever again it he never did though some tried he would always fight back.
