Charlie Gordan is thirty-seven years old and wants to be smart like everyone else because he's mentally slower than most people. Charlie wants to undergo an operation to help him with his intelligence, so dr. Strauss decides to help him out along with a mouse named Algernon.

Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur finally agreed to use Charlie for the operation to improve his intelligence. So after the operation he learns more and he races Algernon to get smarter. Charlie begins to improve fast and his progress reports suddenly get better each and every day.

As time went on and charlie got more brilliant, things started happening to algernon and he bit Charlie. Algernon stoped racing and after some time he eventually passed away. Charlie then wanted to figure out what was happening to him after Algernon passed, so he began to research and write intelligently about everything that was going on.
Charlie suddenly starts to forget things and becomes emotional because he doesn't want to accept what might happen to him. As soon as this had happened, he starts to loose himself and who he had become. Charlie's intelligence began to decrease and he starts to forget everything, he also starts to get really sick.
Charlie decides to go away from New York because he doesn't want anyone to feel sorry for him. He feels grateful that he had a chance to be smart but now he's going back to his old habits and doesn't remember much. It's like how he first started and the operation was only temporary.
