The Popes and Kings had all the power during the Medieval times...
They would fight over power a lot
They both were fighting over power because they both felt and thought they should pick the bishops
Pope Gregory didn't agree with bishop emperor Henry IV during 1073.Pope Gregory Ordered to have bishop to be excommunicate. once he found out bishop Henry was trying to get the pope Gregory not to e a pope anymore.
Once Henry was excommunicated he returned to Italy for forgiveness but at first Gregory didn't accept his apology. So Henry stood outside in the snow barefoot for three days until Gregory forgave Henry.
Th fight for power didn't end even after Gregory and Henry died. Eventually the popes and king agree to the popes choosing bishops and abbots. Even thought the popes get to choose the people they still have to obey the king.
