Saul was chosen as the first king by Samuel and even poured holy water on Saul. But king Samuel warned the people of Israel that if they had a king he would be able to enslave them.

Saul decided to go against the God's commands so Samuel had to chose another king for the sake of the Israelites. The Israelites lost support for this king because of his bad actions.

Since David got his victory he was announced the new king for his bravery.He had been leading the Israelites but when it was time to fight the Philistines him and his army defeated him.
