  • Why were longhorn cattle important to the Texas cattle industry? The longhorn’s were used to help with stampeeds. They were overall bigger and louder than the other cattle.They helped fight off cattle theives too.

  • Describe the “daily life” for a cowboy. Cowboys would wake up then put on their clothes and cowboy hat. Next they would eat breakfast if there was anything to cook and eat. After that they would go outside and check up on the animals. They would train horses and brand cows. By the end of a long day they would eat dinner then go to bed, repeat the next day.

  • Why was valuable natural gas that came out of oil wells wasted in   the early years of the oil industry? Valuable gases were wasted because they never found enough oil to keep drilling in the begining. Then they hit a lot of oil and they thought it was unlimited, but little did they know it wasnt unlimited.

  • Describe what life was/is like in the oil fields. Working in the oil fields wasn’t an easy task. Laborers usually worked 12 hour shifts every day. Workers would sometimes get burned by the gas wells. Gases that escaped from wells could have killed or injured laborers.
  • How was the arrival of rail lines in Texas important to farmers?The arrival of rail lines to Texas was important to farmers because, more cotton production and money.The cotton production/sales grew because now they could be transported much faster and more safe.The prices grew very high because of the work/time put into the cotton and anything needed for the rail line.

  • How did new technology help farmers adapt to farming in West Texas in the 1840s? New technology helped farmers adapt to West Texas because, the process went faster and easier for farmers. Everything that was new pretty much did the job on its own. For example the horse-drawn plows coud plow several rows at once. Overall the whole farming process became easier and easier over time.
