  • According to page 88, in Al Capone Does my Shirts, convicts played baseball, and getting a convict baseball was popular.
  • According to CNN, "Kids rode a boat to school. . ."
  • CNN also says, "Prisoners, under the escort of guards, did electrical and plumbing work around the island. They also did laundry, gardening, baking and shoe repairs."
  • Also according to CNN, "Babyak recalled being beckoned by a prisoner when she was 7 years old. He passed her a ball through a chain link fence." According to the NPS, "On Alcatraz, baseball was popular talk amongst the inmates, but softball is what they played. . .balls hit over the wall were considered outs, not home-runs." Also, the Alcatraz Gift Shop says that convict baseballs were popular.
