According to page 88, in Al Capone Does my Shirts, convicts played baseball, and getting a convict baseball was popular.
According to CNN, "Kids rode a boat to school. . ."
CNN also says, "Prisoners, under the escort of guards, did electrical and plumbing work around the island. They also did laundry, gardening, baking and shoe repairs."
Also according to CNN, "Babyak recalled being beckoned by a prisoner when she was 7 years old. He passed her a ball through a chain link fence." According to the NPS, "On Alcatraz, baseball was popular talk amongst the inmates, but softball is what they played. . .balls hit over the wall were considered outs, not home-runs." Also, the Alcatraz Gift Shop says that convict baseballs were popular.
