  • In 1788, at King's College School (Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada), students adapted the popular game of hurley to be played on ice, and it was first played with a ball
  • This new game quickly spread throughout  Canada via Scottish and Irish immigrants
  • British soldiers helped the spread as well, adapting concepts from field hockey such as shinning
  •  The first recorded indoor ice hockey game took place in Montreal between students of McGill University in 1875, and now used a puck
  • The game spread west to the Pacific area of Canada, and South into the U.S., mostly New England and Michigan
  • The Manitoba Hockey Association was formed in 1892, starting the Stanley cup competition
