In the beginning of the story, the narrator, Montresor, meets Fortunado at the the carnival. Fortunado and Montresor chat for a while. The Monstresor comes up with a plan. Knowing Fortunado wronged him, he seeks revenge.
Montresor decides to make Fortunado finally pay for what he did to him. He decides to manipulate him into going down into the corridors. He tells Fortunado to come taste his Amontillado, Knowing there is none down there.
Once they reach the inside the wine cellar together, Montresor and Fortunado talk and walk. All of a sudden, Fortunado starts couging uncontrollably. Montresor offers Fortunado some medoc, he drinks some. Then continued to start talking and walking again.
As they approach the end of the wine cellar, a drunk Fortunado becomes sicker and sicker. Meanwhile, Montresor plans to execute him soon.
Montresor tricks a drunken and bewildered Fortunado, into letting him chain him up, and build a wall over him. When Fortunado realizes whats happening, he panics.
Montresor successfully locks Fortundo away, He leaves in victory. Fortunado soon died of his sickness. No mortal has disturbed his bones in half a century.
