While at Stanley's apartment, Stanley inappropriately touches Jeannette and himself. Rose doesn't do anything about the situation and even feels bad for Stanley saying that he is lonely.
One day, Brian and Jeannette found a diamond ring on the edge of their property among the pill bags, night crawlers, and a piece of rotting lumber. When they brought the ring to Rosemary, she refused to sell the ring, claiming that this would improve her self-esteem even though it could improve their living conditions.
Jeannette learned about other families through research in the library. She urged Rosemary to leave Rex because she claimed that Rex is destroying himself and that leaving Rex would allow Rosemary to receive government aid. Rosemary refused but promised that she would get a job.
