Mathidle's husband agrees to use the money he saved up to get her a dress, but Mathidle still isn't satisfied because she wants a necklace to go with it.
Mathidle goes to her friend Madame Forestier's house to borrow a necklace. She chooses a beautiful diamond necklace.
Mathidle has a great time at the ball and she meets many important people. She is the most beautiful woman there and people are eager to be introduced.
When Mathidle returns home she realizes she lost the diamond necklace. She looks everywhere but still can't find it.
After ten years of hard work and labor, Mathidle finally saves up enough money to buy the necklace back, but when she sees Madame Forestier she is told the necklace she lost was fake.
