Taylor Edwards is 17 years old; she has an older brother named Warren and a younger sister named Gelsey. Her family is not very close until her father is diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. So ther family decides to spend her fathers last days at their summer llake house in the Pocono Mountains.
Taylor has not been to the lake house in five years, and has some unfinished business. Her old best friend, Lucy is still mad at her and her old boyfriend, Henry seems to be standoffish as well. But Taylor has to work with Lucy and she keeps running into Henry, se knows that eventually she will have to apologize. While all of this is going on, Taylor's dad is still not getting better.
Taylor makes up with Lucy, after Lucy ignores her for weeks. Warren's love life is going very well after meeting Wendy. And Gelsey found herself a best friend that lives right across the street. Taylor gets caught in the rain and Henry takes her to his old tree house. While they are there they tell each other how much they have missed the other person and they start dating again.
Taylor's father is very close to dying and their whole family knows this. To spare Henry some of the burden of being with Taylor through a difficult time, she breaks up with him. He does not want this and neither does she. This only makes her fathers death harder to get through. She is comforted by her grandpa, that comes to see his son before he dies.
After her fathers death Taylor reads the letters that her dad had written to her. They reassure her to keep going with her life. This pushes er to get back together with Henry. Even though they will be far apart they will stay together.
Taylor ends up being very close/ becoming very close with her family after that summer at the lake. Because she knows that, eventually, everything will work itself out.
