Storyboard Text

  • North Korea and South Korea created a border between the two nations at the 38th Parallel. The leader of North Korea, Kim II-Sung, is a communist receiving help from the Soviets. The Soviets were helping North Korea because they wanted communism to spread. The leader of South Korea, Syngman Rhee, had help from America. America was trying to stop the "domino effect" A.K.A. the spread of communism.

  • North Korea invaded the South Korean border. This was happening because the United States and the Soviet Union do not like each other, they have different views. the United States were trying to stop the spread of Communism while the Soviet Union was trying to do the opposite.

  • More than 75 thousand North Korean troops crossed over the 38th Parallel and Kim II-Sung took over South Korea's capital, Seoul. North Korea soon took over all of South Korea except for the city farthest south, Busan.

  • When Busan was the only city left in South Korea, the reached out for help. America got the United Nations together.

  • During this time, the Soviet Union did not show because they were protesting against the UN since they were not allowing communist China to join.
  • Quickly, more soldiers arrived and they were able to push out all of the North Korean troops. There was lots of fighting between both North and South Korea such as advancing onto each others territory and then losing it. China backed away from the South and sent troops to the North. This created air flights between the nations and advanced the South to the 38th Parallel.
  • And stay out!
  • The new U.S. president Eisenhower took over in 1953. He signed an armistice at the 38th Parallel in Panmunjom. This was the end of the war. There was then a border built between North and South Korea that is still there today.
