So tell me, Lucille, what have you been doing for company this tedious August?
After Polly died from a mysterious fever, Mattie worked day in and day in the coffee shop doing all of Polly’s duties, such as waiting tables. Mattie still had to do her daily chores and was always very exhausted at the end of the day.
Mattie and her mother go to the Ogilvie’s house for tea and pastries. Mattie was starving, but the rude Ogilvie sisters “accidentally” dropped the pastries on the floor. After the unpleasant visit, Mattie and her mother found out that one of the Ogilvie sisters had the yellow fever.
After Mattie and Grandfather got dumped from the wagon because Grandfather supposedly had the fever, Mattie and Grandfather stayed under a chestnut tree. Mattie had to go out and follow the willows to find a river for clean water and food.
When Mattie and Grandfather arrive home, the coffeehouse is destroyed, and they struggle making meals for themselves because the garden is very scarce of food. One night robbers come into the coffeehouse in the middle of the night and beat up and sadly kill Grandfather.W
