Eben, Curzon, and other soldiers were dragging logs and firewood bundles. But every step of the way was mud that got stuck to their boots.
Helping the Sergeant
As Curzon stopped at the edge of the woodlot the crows were louder than usual. only, a man shouted for the sawing to stop.
Arriving at the tent
Eben was asking for help. It seemed like his uncle had got hurt. He clutched his ankle, rocking back and forth in the bloody snow.
When it was all over
A man in a hunting shirt rushed over and tightened the sergeant's knee with a rope, tight enough so that the rope tightened around the leg. The blood slowed. They gave they gave him rum before taking him to the nearest surgeons tent.
The sergeants anklebone was shattered into many little pieces to recover. So, the doctor had to finish what the axe had already started. Curzon tried to get Eben away from the sounds coming from the tent. But he wouldn't leave so Curzon stayed with him.
Eben had a candle so that he would still be able to see his uncles face. His uncle was overhauled by a brutal fever. The next morning at dawn he had died.
