  • How did new technology help farmers adapt to farming in West Texas in the 1840s? Texas began using mechanical farm tools such as Horse-drawn plows, Two-row planters,  Threshers, Steam-power threshers, and Steam powered machines.  Horse-drawn plows could plow several rows at once, Two-row planters made planting easier and faster, Threshers separated grain from plants, and Steamed-power machines were rare to have and often brought sight to the naked eye.
  • Why were longhorn cattle important to the Texas cattle industry? During the mid 1800 the longhorns showed up in Texas. The new breed of cattle made babies with the English mixed with Spanish cattle.  However longhorns help keep the mountain lions, wolf, and other predators away by using their horns. People started to kill longhorn to put on walls, make buttons, decorations, household utensils from the horns. They even hollowed out the horns to store gunpowder.
  • Describe what life was like in the oil fields. Thousands of Texans came to seek work for the oil industry. Many of them were young farmers looking for a different type of work. Most people were concerned with the drilling oil than city planning, a lot of Texas boomtowns were crowded, dirty, and rough places. Oil-field workers normally lived in tents or wooden shacks. Some people offered gambling and drinking, these activities led to violence  making some boomtowns dangerous.
