Hi, my name is Abbey. I am the little girl standing on the basketball court. I am here to tell you the story of my struggle to get on the girls basketball team because of my height.
It all started on the day of the tryouts. I have been playing basketball for a couple of years, so I wasn't bad. I walked into the gym and the captain of the team looked at me in a judging way, but I just ignored it.
Umm... sorry but I don't think so. As team captain I am looking for taller girls that will actually help benefit the team, but maybe next year.
Oh man this girl does not look good at basketball at all!
Can I tryout for the girls basketball team?
I came home from school not in the best mood. My mom came into the room and asked why my day was so terrible. I told her what had happened.
They didn't let me try out because I wasn't tall enough.
That is not ok! That is unfair, and we have to talk to someone about this.
The next day my mom came into the gym with me wanting to talk to the captain about excluding me.
Hi, I’m Abbey’s mom and I would just like to say that it is not right for you to not let my daughter join the team because of her height.
Oh well I'm sorry. I didn't mean to exclude your daughter. I guess you are right it is not fair to judge peoples skills on their height. Abbey you may tryout.
That afternoon Abbey tried out, and ended up impressing the captain very much!
Oh it's ok. Thanks for letting me tryout! So did I make the team?
Wow! You are amazing! I guess I did judge a book by its cover. I'm very sorry.
Yes! Absolutely! Welcome to the team!
From then on, the girls basketball team was based on their skills and not their height! So, the moral of my story is not all basketball players have to be tall!
