  • Mommy, whats wrong with me. I don't like this.
  • Well let me tell a bit about Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy
  • As you being a boy you inherited an x chromosome from your father and another x from me, your mother. Me and and your Father are carriers of DMD. Now, DMD is inherited through an x-linked recessive pattern. Which means you must have two copies of the DMD gene for you to be affected. This is why boys are mostly affected.
  • Environmental factors or an inherited gene can cause a mutation. This mutation can cause the whole protein to change or be unusable. Also, when DNA is replicated it creates mRNA. When there is a mutation and the the DNA is replicated it causes the mRNA to be out of order, which will in turn create unusable proteins.

  • So this means that the protein that is responsible for muscle reparation  "dystrophin" is supposed to be created through this process of DNA Replication. Instead a mutation can cause this protein to be sparse or be completely dismissed.
  • Dystrophin connects the  sacromere and the myofibrils. It acts as an anchor for the parts of the muscle when they contract and tear. So without this, proteins will not be allowed to repair the muscle after it tears through use of the muscle. So over time, muscles will get weaker and smaller. A mutation would cause low dystrophin or none at all.
