"What a stupid girl you are! You think you matter to him
"Mariam caught a glimpse of what was beneath the tree: the straight-backed chair, overturned. The rope dropping from a high branch. Nana danging at the end of it" (36).
Rasheed & Mariam's Abusive Marriage
Mariam is punished for being born as a harami, despite having any part of her birth, and because of this she must stay away from her family to avoid damaging her father's reputation. Growing up outside the city in a small shack, she has to accept the harsh reality that she will never be part of the family.
After being deprived of seeing her family, Mariam returns to the sight of Nana hanging from a tree of which is inherently her fault due to her sudden departure. Mariam, then, has to continue on living with her only sense of family gone.
