  • Hello my name is Richard James and I am a naval engineer
  • I invented the Slinky
  • This is boring
  • It was 1943 when I accidentally invented the slinky
  • I hate my job
  • I was stationed at the William Cramp & Sons shipyards in Philadelphia
  • WHY WON'T THIS WORK?
  • I was developing springs that could support and stabilize sensitive instruments aboard ships in rough seas.
  • Oops
  • I accidentally knocked one of the springs from a table, and watched as the spring "stepped" in a series of arcs to a stack of books and to the floor.
  • And that was when the slinky was born
