  • Langston Hughes was born on February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. Sadley after he was born, his mother and father divorce. He was mostly raised by his grandmother. but she died when he was a teenager.

  • After his grandma Mary died he went to live he went to live with his mother. They settled in Cleveland, Ohio.  And went to school, where his teaches introduced poetry to Langston. He started to enjoy writing poems.

  • After Langston graduated he went to mexico the fallowing year in mexico with his father. Hughes' poem "The negro speaks of rivers" was published and was highly praised.

  • He went to Columbia university but he got lonely and unhappy so he dropped out. He worked in various of jobs before signing up on as a steward on a freighter that took him to Africa and Spain. He left the ship on 1924 and lived for a brief time in Paris, where he developed and published his poetry.
  • When langston worked as a bus boy, he met a American poet who was very impressed by his poems at a restaurant. His name was Vachel Lindsay. He was so impressed he promoted Hughes' poetry which brought a wider audience.

  • On May 22, 1967 Langston Hughes died because of a complicated prostate cancer. To his poetry, hi funeral was filled with jazz and blues music. His ashes were interred bench the entrance of the Arthur Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem.
