Rusty-James runs into his old friend at the beach, Steve Hays. They catch up with each other. Rusty just got out of the reformatory, and Steve is going to college. Steve notices Rusty's scar. Rusty tells him that he got it in knife fight, but Steve already knew that because he was there when it happened.
Rusty tells Steve about previous stuff in his life. Rusty talks about Biff Wilcox and how Biff wanted to kill him. Rusty wasn't afraid, but annoyed that Biff wanted to kill him because of something he said about some girl named Anita. Rusty tells his friends about what he said, and they agree, fighting about it is a dumb idea. Then Steve interrupts by warning Rusty about gang fights and he uses a warning told to him by Rusty's older brother, Motorcycle Boy.
After Steve mentions Motorcycle Boy, Rusty gets angry and makes plans to fight Biff. Rusty waits at his girlfriend's house, Patty until the fight happens. Rusty arrives to fight Biff with a couple of his friends, Steve, Smokey, and their friend B.J. Biff also brought a couple of friends. Before, they fight Rusty starts to think that Biff is on drugs because of his behavior. This worries Rusty because the fight might be unfair. Then Biff pulls out a knife, and Rusty manages to keep the knife away from Biff until it seems to be over. Motorcycle Boy then shows up to announce that he's back. Rusty is distracted by Motorcycle Boy for a moment so Biff decides to grab the knife and he then stabs Rusty in the side. Motorcycle Boy ends it by breaking Biffs wrist.
Motorcycle Boy, and Steve eventually get Rusty home. Rusty, and Motorcycle live with their father who is barely ever there, and he is also alcoholic.
