This is a story of two men a old man and another man they belived he wasn't crazy. They both lived in a creaky older two story house. The man that belived he wasn't crazy had acute hearing and the older gentleman had a blue film over one of his eyes. " I was never kinder to the old man than during the whole week before I killed him."
For 7 nights in a row the man who belived he wasn't crazy watched the older man while he slept. "And every night, around midnight, I turned the latch of his door and opened it."
On the eighth night the man went into the old mans room, but tonight the man was very exicted and he did a little giggle and he thought that the old man may have heard him because he moved in his bed. But the man continued to enter in the old mans room. Then the man's thumb slipped on the tin fastening of the lanturn and the old man woke up. After awhile the old man finally lyed back down but he was still awake. Then the man went in and put the matress on top of the old man and smothered him with his own matress. "He was stone dead"
The man cut up the dead body and stuffed it under the floorboards. Then the cops show up after a neighbor called about a scream coming from the house. "A shriek had been heard by a neighbour during the night"
The cops didn't find anything but the man had been hearing a loud thumping in his head. It was the old man's heartbeat. It became too much for the man to handle because the heartbeat got to be too loud. He turned himself into the cops, and they arrested them. " I admit the deed! Tear up the planks!
In this scene, the man can hear the old man's heartbeat under the floorboards but the officers can't. "Was it possible they heard it not?"
