  • Alex is a 12 year old boy. He is ill, and spends a lot of time in the hospital during his childhood.
  • Alex knows that whenever he goes to the hospital, he has to have painful shots (US). The shots make him feel afraid (UR).
  • Ouch! That hurts!
  • Alex notices that the doctor always uses rubbing alcohol on his arm before giving Alex a shot.
  • *sniff sniff* my arm smells like rubbing alcohol (CS), Mom.
  • One day, Alex is at home. His mom has a cut on her arm, and she uses rubbing alcohol to clean it.

  • is that... *sniff sniff*...
  • His mom explains to him that he is afraid (CR) of the rubbing alcohol smell (CS) because of his association of it with the painful shots (US) at the hospital.
  • Alex smells the rubbing alcohol (CS), and all of a sudden, he feels very afraid (CR)!

  • Without the painful shot (US) accompanying the smell (CS), Alex eventually stops feeling fearful (CR) when he smells rubbing alcohol. Extinction has occurred!
  • Over time, Alex is exposed to the smell of rubbing alcohol more often.
