It's the first day of freshmen year at Plymouth High and everyone starts the day with receiving a tag that tells what popularity group there in based on their past years in school. I am tagged as a student council nerd with all of my friends since kindergarten. Everyone else is chosen to be in the categories jock, nerd, loser, goth, most popular, and a student council good person.
All my friends are super excited about their tags saying it's better than being a jock or a goth and I just agree. The only problem is when I am alone I think about what I would be like as another tag and find myself wanting to be another person. If I tell my friends they'll think I'm crazy but how can I live like this.
I go to the mall with my group of similar tags to hang out. Suddenly I blurt out how I feel about my tag and how I wish that sometimes I was a different tag like a jock. Everyone stops and stairs and finally my best friend Tricia speaks and tells me to not to say that and that I should be happy with my tag. I agree with her and tell her that I don't know what I was thinking. I knew they wouldn't understand.
I am sitting in science class which happens to be a mixed tagged class. I am sitting at a table with Alana a most popular, Bruce and jock, and Ethan a goth. The same feeling comes over me and I blurt out, "Do you guys like you're tags." They stare and then get this weird look in their eyes like they agree. "I knew it," I said. We have to do something everyone should like their tags or have multiple tags.
We meet at the board walk in Plymouth to talk about how we are going to change history. Finally we come to a conclusion that everyone should have multiple tags because people have multiple personalities. So we plan to go to the board of schools to change this tradition for the better of the future. This plan might get freedom for those not brave enough to speak.
The board sees and understands our side of the story and allows us to have an assembly where we tell people that they can have as many tags as they want or even have no tags. Multiple people come out and say that they hate the tags too and that this way they can choose who they are and change themselves for the better. Jocks become the most popular, nerds, and goth. Even some of the most popular people decide to have no tag. Now I can be who I want to be without a tag and all my friends.
