- Billy Jo was going to Mr. Hardly’s store to buy stuff for daddy’s cake. Mr. Hardly was scamming people at his shop during these tough times in the dust storms, because he thought he could get away with it. Mr. Hardly tried to scam Billy Jo but he actually gave her more change than he should’ve. She thought of buying new sheets of music, but she gave back the extra change he gave her.
- The purpose of the author adding this section helps the readers understand the lesson on how Mr. Hardly cheats himself on giving too much money to her after he scams other people. The lesson here is to not cheat people and steal their money. The text states, “ Mr. Hardly’s money handling, and Mr. Hardly had cheated again. Only this time he’d cheated himself, giving us four cents extra.” This shows that Mr. Hardly is careless with money and shouldn’t be trusted with it. Many readers learned that you shouldn’t be careless with money or scam because you will mess up and make a mistake like Mr. Hardly has.
